First of all, we need to clearly understand Stress.

What is stress? Situations that can cause stress

Stress is the level at which you feel overwhelmed or can not cope due to pressures

At the most basic level, stress is body's response under pressure

So where does accountants' stress come from?

*Causes of stress from "external" sources:

According to CABA's 2019 research on accounting professionals:

  • 41% due to overwork

  • 33% due to office politics

  • The 29% feels underrated

  • 29% due to no increase in salary or bonus

  • 28% because of too many meetings

In addition, the cause can be from worrying about the health of yourself and those around you, having to face stories of illness, worrying about the family economy, the future of children...

*Situations that can cause stress from “inside”:

  • Thoughts: often feel negative, anxious, self-blame

  • Emotions – most noticeable: Includes symptoms such as:

– More anxiety, anger, fear than usual

– Change in personality

– Difficulty feeling relaxed and peaceful

– Loss of interest in daily activities

– Mood changes (sadness – agitation)

Along with emotions, there will often be physical reactions, which are considered physiological stress

Some reactions of the body when stressed: Often headaches, neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, minor illnesses

  • Behavior:

– Sleep disorder: Difficulty sleeping, lethargy

- Eating disorder

– Abnormal weight gain/loss (5%)

– Unable to control behavior (shopping, playing games, drinking, smoking, cleaning, scolding...)

– Reduced work productivity

– Difficulty recording information/events

- Difficulty concentrating

– Difficult/unable to make decisions

*Note: if the signs last more than 2 weeks, or there are more than 3 signs, you need to seek professional help

Thoughts - Behaviors - Emotions are interrelated. Your thoughts will cause corresponding emotions and behaviors. At the same time, emotions and behaviors also affect thoughts.

Stress can come from the "outside" and "inside" sides. External situations are often difficult to control, so be proactive with the "inside" side to transform stress from your own thoughts - behaviors - emotions.
